Build in 1879 by British, fort Tanjong Katong was abandoned in 1901 and subsequently buried. Then, it was the eastern-most fortification and military's installation build in Singapore to serve a first line of defense to protect against invaders from sea.
The structure that you see is the south-east bastion that has been left uncovered for public viewing. Bastions or caponier are infantry position where the defenders of the fort can bring small arms to fire at the enemy assaulting the fort walls.
The fort is the only "True Fort" in Singapore that reflects the 19th Century military architecture.
