Heritage Place - Where Singapore's Greening Movement Began

Heritage Place - Where Singapore's Greening Movement Began (2021 0510)

On 16 June 1963, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's Founding Prime Ministry, planted a Mempat tree at Farrer Circus, which was located at the current junction of Holland Road and Farrer Road, and lunched an island-wide greening movement that has continuous for more than five decades.

Mr Lee made greening a priority as he belived that the introduction of greenery would soften the harshness of urbanization and improve Singaporeans' quality of life. The original Mempat tree was removed due to redevelopment. A grove of Mempat trees has been planted in its place to remind us of Mr Lee's vision and the relentless efforts of our pioneers to transform Singapore into a city in a Garden.
