The Kapok (Ceiba pentandra), also known as the Silk Cotton Tree, produces a massive trunk covered with thorns. As its name suggests, its black seeds are embedded in a mass of light, woolly hairs which are a source of cotton used for stuffing pillows.
This majestic individual next to Holttum Hall is a Heritage Tree that was planted in 1933 by Eric Holttum, former director of the Gardens. The seed from which this tree grew was a gift from the Bogor Botanic Gardens in West Java.
