Department of Customs and Excise (now Singapore Customs) from 1932 to 1989. The
building was commissioned and built between 1930 and 1933 by the Public Works
Department of the colonial government, and served as the headquarters of the
Department of Customs and Excise (now Singapore Customs) from 1932 to 1989.
The style and
architecture of Custom House is reminiscent of other buildings designed by
Frank Dorrington Ward Custom House was designed around a courtyard surrounded
by rooms with windows for light and air to enter.
Maxwell Road Post
Office was a major tenant that occupied the ground floor of the former Custom
House, located at the junction of Maxwell Road and Wallich Road.
After it was completed in 1932 at a cost of $313,000, the Custom House was used as the headquarters of the Singapore Customs. Like other buildings commissioned by the Public Works Department (PWD), it also housed several other administrative offices, in which the Film Censor’s Office was one of the tenants.
